The STAR Interview Technique is used by many employers during the hiring process. STAR stands for Situation/Task, Action and Result.
This job interview technique is based on the fact that the best predictor of future performance is someone’s past performance. During interviews, the hiring managers will not ask questions based on hypothetical scenarios.
The interviewers ask behavioural questions connected to specific business challenges. These STAR interview technique focuses on the candidate providing specific examples that will help assess performance and potential.
Whilst many organisations have an established behavioural interview methodology, Amazon has developed a well regarded model. The Amazon hiring philosophy is linked to one of their leadership principles – Hire and Develop the Best.
An example of a STAR Interview technique used in Amazon is: Give me an example of a project you worked on that had significant impact on the business.
To answer this question, you will need to:
SITUATION/TASK
Describe the situation or task that you were faced with.
Your answer should include where and when the example happened, why was this case important, what was the goal as well as the challenges.
This helps to provide context to the hiring manager to assess the scope and scale of the project.
ACTION
Next, you should describe the actions that you personally took.
You should provide relevant detail that made an impact. For many companies, impact is measurable, so include data points and anecdotes to highlight this.
If possible, lists the steps you take, ideally 3-5. Be clear on exactly what you did. Use the words “I” more than “we”.
RESULT
Describe the outcome of your actions.
Be comfortable to taking credit for what you did. Clearly explain what happened. What did you achieve? How did it end? What did you learn?
Provide examples using data or metrics is applicable. Show the impact that you have made to the initial problem.
